Evaluating Expressions In Algebra
Ever seen a problem like this : 3x – y Let x = 7 and y = -11 How do you figure this out?? Tip: Any number next to a letter variable you multiply them together So you should input the variables. Your problem should look like this: 3(7) - (-11) What is Evaluating Expressions?
4x – 3y : x = 3 & y = 4 First step! You plug in x & y to the variables. So your problem should now look like this: 4(3) – 3(4) Next you multiply both sides. Your Problem should now look like : 12 – 12 Then solve. 12 – 12 = 0 How to Evaluate Expressions
Evaluating: 1. to determine or set the value or amount of; appraise: to evaluate property. 2. Mathematics. to ascertain the numerical value of (a function, relation, etc.). Expressions: 1. a symbol or a combination of symbols representing a value, relation, or the like. Vocabulary
Evaluating Expressions is used in many different problems ahead that you need to know how to do & understand, So evaluating expressions should help you with many different algebra problems ( bigger more advanced problems). How Does this help you with future problems?
Tip One: To help you in Algebra we use symbols to write out problems in words Such as “ Seven more than a number” would be 7 + n. So you use a varible as the number because you havent figured it out yet. Tip Two: What about writing for differences? You can use words like Seven “ less than” a number which would look like 7 – n. Tip Three: For multiplication you would say 7 times a number, which would look like 7n Tips For Writing Expressions
Congratulations!!!
